1. Fade In

[Director's comments: This is the first version of the opening scene. It's badly overwritten. Especially all that stuff about pizza. I don't know what I was thinking. We made more versions of the opening than any other scene.]

His voice cut the air like an unoiled chainsaw. The harsh cry—made even rougher by the cheap speakers hanging on poles behind the tank—sliced straight through my guts the first time I heard it. But the sound wasn't the part that cut the deepest. The words did the real damage. His words ripped apart anyone who got too close to the cage. He drove his victims to rage. He drove them to curse and shout. Best of all, he drove them to waste their cash for a chance to plunge him into a tank of slimy water.

It was just about the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Which made it all that much more amazing, since I lived in one of the coolest places on the planet, and I'd seen some of the freakiest things man or nature ever created.

I was on my way down the boardwalk to get a slice of pizza at Dino's. There were a couple closer places, but they weren't as good. Dino's made pizza just right—real thin and real crisp. It was a mouth burner—so good you couldn't wait until it was cool enough to take a safe first bite. And they were generous with the cheese.

2. Another Door Closes

[Director's comments: This blooper was totally Malcolm's fault. The scene takes place right after he's given Chad a couple video tapes. Watch what happens when he tries to speak his line.]

"Let me know when you're done with those. I've got plenty more." He walked out, closing the door behind him. "Remember, we've only got three weeks."

[Director's comments: Obviously, he couldn't keep talking to Chad after he closed the door. Here's the scene as we reshot it.]

"Let me know when you're done with those. I've got plenty more. Remember, we've only got three weeks." He walked out, closing the door behind him.
